what could be the cause of dark-ish smoke , cokey smell and sooted up tail pipe .

it smokes and smells sooty on starting , and while its running and i press the gas a little harder
( ie. when stationary on the drive or at traffic lights etc ) , i get a ploom of dark greyish smoke float by .
Also could probably be smokey while motoring along , but not noticed it yet , but then i,m not at the back end .

was all fine a week ago , very confused Confused

thanks

Darren .

phil -- just checked airfilter , looks clean .
the open end of the filter is at the top of the cylinder holder ( where the lid is ) and the blanked bit sits at the bottom , is that correct way round .?
( or does,nt it matter ).

should i stick some REDEX diesal injector cleaner through it .
