Sounds like the Rad to me. Also sounds like you are looking for a cheap magical cure instead. We would all like to have our problems sorted the easy and cheap way but sometimes that just is not possible.
Have you tried a radiator specialist to get a price to RE-CORE your rad if you get it to them, just a thought.
Reading through several posts on, here it seems like one of the commom problems with these vehicles. I don't know why they should block up if the water antifreeze mix is drained and changed out every couple of years or so but that just seems the way it is. Unless of course people just don't bother changing it out at the recomended service intervals.

Gribbles rad tests .

Hold a torch behind the rad and look through the front - if you cant see the light all over as you move the torch the cores blocked.

Bung up the top hose and take off the bottom one ,now pour in water from a watering can fast into the filler if it wont come straight out the tubes are furred up inside.

I would throw the viscous fan into scrap pile and fit leccy one with the sensor in the bottom hose .

Trooper-Dan's reference to the WEIGHT of a clean, new STANDARD Isuzu radiator was a key point. If anyone out there HAS a still unused radiator - maybe he/she wouldbe kind enough to stick it on the bathroom-scales and WEIGH it and post its weight on here. It's an accurate way to determine if a used rad is full of deposits - albeit a troublesome one - 'cos the rad must come out!

Eithan is right - as in the 'sheet of paper test' - I'll have to check to see if the fan is sucking strongly when HOT and weakly when COLD.

Malcolm I'm the 6th owner of this Trooper - even though its done only 80 000miles - so I've no idea what class of coolant has been used during its life to date! As for re-coring the rad - Ireland is a small market so prices are NOT so competitive as one might like!

Gribble The fins ARE more than a bit 'bashed-up' - there's plenty of light showing - but it's NOT perfect. As for water passing through - it DOES, of course, but mayb e not as quickly as it would through a CLEAN radiator.
I'll try to fix the Viscous-Clutch - before I 'abandon ship' and replace it with an electric one.

As Malcolm said - I'm hoping for a cheap magical cure!!

Ran mine with no fan at all for 2+ years, didn't overheat once, so even if the viscous coupling was shot it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.

Never gets anywhere near overheating ...

Sometimes there is no cheap fix .. All you can do is look for best deal ..

You'll end up wasting time trying to get a cheap fix .

But if you really want to try ...... some kind of caustic soda Idea

Would take rad out to try that tho ....

Gribble I tried the 'paper-sheet' - and the fan held up a regular sheet of typing-paper - and an A4 envelope too - while COLD - so the 'test' was meaningless - for a Trooper, at least!

Eithan Please pardon the CAPITALS - I do it just to emphasise the important bits in a sentence. My only excuse is that a pal, to whom I write regularly, tends to 'speed-read' and skips half of what I write - so I use daft tricks like that to 'keep his attention'! Silly, I suppose.............!

adz1973 Of course the scales must be properly calibrated! We're serious folk on here! NO SHODDY WORK, if you please!

Trooper-Dan to the rescue again! Roughly 1kg for a 'clean' radiator will do nicely! A clear, definitive test for a good/bad radiator!

Twister & Hunter It seems miraculous that yours did NOT overheat when driven without any fan! Maybe you drive much more 'gently' than I do - but the clear difference is that MINE really is reaching the top of the scale on the thermometer - so I can't ignore it! It certianly needs a more effective coolant-system - whether through cleaning the rad more thoroughly or 'fixing' the fan - one, or both, improvements MUST be made!

I really DO APPRECIATE that everyone is trying to help - and I hope the arguments back and forth will help the dozens of guys who READ without posting any reply!
