|

I bought a 99 trooper June 1 with 74000 miles. In 2 weeks the oil light came on and dipstick was dry. Filled and it was good for another 2 weeks, then needed oil. 2 mechanics looked and found nothing wrong. Dealer says it 'uses alot of oil'. My 20yr old is taking the car cross country to go to school in Sept. Should I put a barrell of oil in the back for her?? |

There's only two places it can go, it's either leaking out somewhere in which case it'll be leaving it's mark on your driveway or it's burning it. If it's burning that much I'd have thought the exhaust would be somewhat smokey but it can sometimes be hard to see. If it's getting through that much oil and not leaking everywhere I would suspect the engine is fairly badly worn. I'm assuming as you're in the USA its a gas engine. _________________ Phil

Thanks Phil. Yes, it's a gas engine. It's not leaving oil marks on my garage floor and it's not blowing smoke out of the muffler. I've heard that this year (99) is notorious for excessive oil consumption and that it may be due to a faulty design with the (?) rings. I've called the local dealer and also the corporate office and they acknowledged the excessive :( oil usage but said since it's out of warrantee I'm out of luck unless I buy a new engine which would cost more than I paid for the car. Since I'm a social worker, I don't make a whole lot of $$, so I'm going to opt to try the synthetic oil trick. I'm using regular oil right now. I still don't know what kind of motor the car has, since my daughter took the car before I could check (I know it's terribly 'female' to not know the motor type but, oh well....) |

Don't panic, read the threads in planetisuzoo.com on this subject and do the seafoam treatment.
If you can't find seafoam then removing the spark plugs and pouring redex into the pots, and soaking it overnight will fix it. You may need more than one treatment. Don't forget to turn the engine over, plugs out, to empty as much redex / seafoam out as possible before replacing the plugs.
Probably sensible to change the oil after redex treatment. Use Mobil 1 0-40.
And check the oil every time you fill with fuel! |

I'm assuming that it has a tendency for the oil control rings to stick then. I've ehard a lot about seafoam on a few chevy forums I inhabit, it's a shame you can't get it here in the UK. _________________ Phil
