Hi, i need help. I bought a 93 bighorn two weeks ago. It had been standing for 6 months. I run round in it for a day and all was fine. I hooked my caravan on the back and went away for the weekend and again all was well. I took the car in for an oil change and check over after the weekend and when it came back it ran as before. The problem then.

The following weekend we went to go away with the caravan again. We had got about two miles on a main road and the engine stopped. I looked at the clocks and it had overheated. I let it cool down and the engine restarted and went back home.

I checked the therostat and it was stuck closed, so thats why the temp had gone so high. The problem now is this.

I have driven the car for six hundred miles sinse, and the water, oil ect look fine, But on start up hot or cold i get loads of bluey/black smoke. It lasts about 30 seconds to a 1 min and then its clear. What do you think is wrong with it?

The engine is a 4jg2 if that helps.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

Welcome to the club Very Happy

It sounds like valve stem oil seals to me, nothing to worry about unless uses a lot of oil.
But i may be wrong so just wait for the others Smile

Could be the head gasket if it started after it overheated.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I am hoping it's not the head gasket, but there is to much smoke on start up to be just the valve stem oil seals.

I am told that the injectors can be damage if an engine over heats and can create the problem i am having? The exhaust is now very black as if it is really rich to. I was getting about 21 to 23 to the gallon, now down to 18 so thought this might be a clue. Wouldent the water or oil show signs if the head gasket had gone?

Many thanks

Paul

Ok then, i would go for a compression test
Thats coolant and cylinders,
But before you do take the oil filler cap off when running, if you get smoke its the rings.
And get the injectors tested

Hi, Just started it and took the oil cap off. There is a little blow, no smoke. The engine has done 225,000 km so would expect a little smoke out of the oil cap.

The smoke out of the back on start up is grey. Just started it and run to the back. Gassed the street out again.

Get the injectors tested then, because if it runs fine and doesnt use oil or water, then thats the only option.

Come on guys HELP

Neither 2.8 or 3.1 heads like getting hot. My cylinder head man will not even look at them if they have over heated. Certainley a compression test before thinking about injectors, just to be on the safe side. Good luck Wink
