going to change oil this weekend ( first time ).
i noticed ( on past threads ) that oil levels recommended differ.
Question -- how much oil will i need , the trooper is a 3.1 TD 93K plate , twin batteries , auto hubs model .
And for normal ( british weather) running which viscosity oil should i be putting in .
last oil and filter change( just before i bought it ) was almost 5,500 miles ago ( do i need to change the filter this time or not , and is it just one filter ).
thanks lads |

Just the one filter. I change them everytime I change the oil. Buy the best oil you can afford, bearing in mind you're gonna be changing it frequently! _________________ 1994 KZJ70 Cruiser (currently filling the garage and causing some head scratching)

I think its about 4.3L with a filter change,
3.8L without filter change _________________ |

It doesn't matter whether full or semi synthetic. Fully synth will last longer but you should be changing well before semi has reached the end of it's life. _________________ 1994 KZJ70 Cruiser (currently filling the garage and causing some head scratching)

Darren, the 3.1 is normally 6 litres with filter. I use a good 15w40 which is the recommended grade of oil & change every 3000 miles/ 5000 km (approx ) The filter is accessed from underneath as you say, the shorter chubby filters are fairly tight, the longer skinny ones are easy to do. Use a 3 armed filter wrench on a 300mm extension from your socket ratchet driver to loosen the filter. STOP at this point & get a piece of cardboard about 350mm x200mm & bend into a channel & slide it up under the filter so it lets the oil run down it & not go over the X member. The filter will need to be undone fully now & slid back to where it can be dropped out between the torsion bar & the front drive shaft. I've seen it mentioned on here that it is easier to drop the X member under the engine ( 4 bolts) which does not disturb anything & improves access a lot. I've never had to do this 'cause mine has the long skinny filters

Darren, I find with mind that I can slide under it to do the change without needing to jack it up, mind you a pit or hoist would be easier but its not too bad. I haven't ever taken off the X member but as far as I can see, that should be it, just 4 bolts & you would have a fairly clear run. This method was recommended if my memory serves me correctly by a member who worked as a service man for isuzus in a Subaru/ Isuzu workshop, he is no longer active I believe & I can't recall the name, someone else might.

Darren, sorry I'm telling lies, I run the vehicle up onto some 8" x 4 " blocks I made up with a ramped end, not very much higher but makes a difference. (Just finished night shift so memory unreliable)
