Rich - I've checked your figures and they seem accurate - but I fear you're taking a chance for NO GAIN.
When 50% mix is recommended, it's partly because 10% either way will leave a car well protected - whereas if one makes a 10% error from 30% that could leave the car dangerously exposed to frost - as a 20% mix is safe only to -8°C.
We're ALL rather prone to making mistakes - this is a risk NOT worth taking! If more cooling for the engine is required - just turn on the cab-heater! |
I think a 10% difference in cooling efficiancy is a worth while gain by carefully measuring the coolant mix.
I pre-mix it in a large container then poor it in.
If unsure of the glycol conentratrion and level of protection, you could always use a hydrometer to measure the coolant concentration.
I like to keep the cab heater as my last line of deffence! Which has been used in anger. |

How much water does the 3.0 manual, non aircon, hold? I've been searching but cannot find anything!
Lots of posts say 30% antifreeze, 50/50, etc. but not the total capacity _________________ 1999 3.0 TD Duty SWB

Update!
According to Castrol and planetisuzoo:
3.0 and 3.1 9 litres
2.8 2.3 10.5
Rodeo 3.0 11.5
I've taken this info from their respective sites, so assume they are correct!
Ive got a 25l drum of Triple QX Red concentrated from Euro Car Parts, lasts 5 years, was on offer at £33, don't know if it still is though, they don't advertise the 'trade' sales much.
so at 50% which is full strength, both summer and winter use, I need 4.5 litres...or you could get a 5 litre and stick the lot in! _________________ 1999 3.0 TD Duty SWB
